A Twelve Year Blip

Twelve years ago, I was moving to Nashville, TN after being transferred within my company. I loaded up everything I wanted to keep from the college apartment I was still living in, and it all fit in the back of my S10 truck. With nothing protruding above the cargo area, and a tarp stretched flat over the whole thing because it was raining that day. In the front seat with me, I had some bed linens and two pillows, and that is about it.

Today I loaded up my similar sized Nissan Frontier with stuff in much the same manner. The volumes were almost identical. This time, obviously, I wasn't moving, but just getting rid of stuff I no longer wanted or needed. It is telling that twelve years ago everything I wanted to keep is approximately equal to everything I got rid of today. Conversely, the stuff I wanted to keep today would take a dozen Nissan Frontiers or S10s to load into.

Hmm, it seems to be multiplying in the dark corners of your home. 9 years ago when I moved to Yuma I took only a truck load. But I had a bunch of stuff at my sister's house so I can't trully say everything I owned fit in to my truck. Since you owned that little once, I have no doubt you could do it again if you had to.

I know the feeling. We are moving next Thursday and hope all our belongings will fit into a 24' Uhaul truck. I think we'll be ok, but it's amazing the amount of stuff we have now...and we only live in a 720 sq ft home.

We're judging our wastefulness by how much we are throwing away or donating - which so far is only one trash bag and one box of "stuff" (mainly gifts we've never used).

Daizy,

I have some doubt, but I don't think I ever really want to find out. Just getting down to a manageable state is all I really want.

Kevin M,

I got rid of a lot of gifts myself. How big of a house are you moving to. Stuff tends to fill available space.

It must be that spring cleanin' thing goin' on in people's minds. Cuz I've heard of a lot of people gettin rid of the clutter. Maybe I should meet up with the fun. I guess I know what I am doin' in 2 weekends. :)
